Job Description
The successful candidate will have legal dispute resolution and claims assessment experience, some of which will ideally have been gained in-house and in connection with high profile and/or sensitive matters
The purpose of these roles is to assist Post Office in managing contentious legal matters within its Historical Matters team and assessing claims, including consequential loss claims received from Postmasters. It will also require proactive working with stakeholders in the Historical Matters business team, the general Post Office Legal Department, the external legal team, and the wider business to ensure that legal input is obtained where needed.
The Historical Matters Unit has been formed within Post Office to resolve certain legacy issues facing Post Office in connection with its historic dealings with Postmasters. The Historical Matters legal team has the overall lead in advising on (and co-ordinating) the legal workstreams within various remediation schemes and legacy issues. This includes (but is not limited to) the Historical Shortfall Scheme (a remediation scheme arising from the settlement of the Post Office Group Litigation in 2019), matters connected with criminal convictions, and compensation for historical liabilities. The team will also support Post Office in the submissions it makes to the Public Inquiry chaired by Sir Wyn Williams.
Responsibilities:
- Help to implement streamlined processes to promote efficiency and ensure all claims are dealt with promptly
- A review of a selection of Post Office held documentation and investigation reports, Postmaster claims and
- supporting documentation provided by claimants (which will vary from to claim to claim)
- Instructing and monitoring external advisers, working collaboratively on large matters
- Managing historical claims received from Postmasters such as in respect of shortfalls, remuneration-based claims and consequential losses
- Respond to changing requirements based on case flow and complexity of claims
- Analysis of the merits and deficiencies of each claims, and preparation of an assessment
- Reporting (verbally and written) as necessary to senior stakeholders
Requirements:
- Demonstrable confidence, initiative and ability to work collaboratively
- Experience of claims assessment and complaints handling (ideally on high profile and sensitive matters) Ability to prioritise
- Experience with dispute resolution
- Flexible and adaptable approach with a willingness to provide support where needed
- Ability to work unsupervised with drive and self-motivation
- Effective working with multi-disciplinary teams
- Ability to synthesise and present complex matters for senior, non-legal management
- Able to gain the confidence of and influence senior management
- UK qualified lawyer with up to 7 years PQE
