Overview
Position Title: Network Operations Engineer
Company: Ocado Technology
Location: Liverpool, UK
Job Description
Our teams are putting the world’s retailers online using the cloud, robotics, AI, and IoT. We provide services to partner clients globally via our innovative advanced robotics technology, known as the Ocado Smart Platform (“OSP”), this drives our highly automated, multi-million pound Customer Fulfilment Centres (CFCs). In our CFCs – together with the proprietary software applications – we operate a world-class online grocery business that automates the single pick of products, ready for your online delivery.
Responsibilities:
- Our networks are based primarily on Juniper Networks hardware with a small amount of PaloAlto running too, MPLS drives the core of the network, leveraging the Juniper MX platform. In the Data Centres, you will find a mixture of L3VPNs using BGP attached servers and EVPN-enabled VXLAN overlays. We make use of technologies like Python, Ansible and Git to automate as much of our operation as possible.
- You will be working as part of a team, or independently, to create network designs that fit both customer requirements and non-functional requirements (e.g. security, performance, observability). This will involve assisting with scripting, tooling and automation for network deployment, configuration and monitoring – (ideally) scripting and automation using Python or other languages.
- You will be involved in testing new project designs and technologies and identifying opportunities to utilise white box networking products and open source solutions.
- We would also expect that you will take a leading role in road mapping and developing future network evolutions.
- The CFCs operate 24x7x365 therefore it is essential our networks are supported, this role also requires participating in the 24×7 on-call support rota with PagerDuty for escalated issues.
Requirements:
- You have a passion for technology and having open and honest discussions about the merits and drawbacks of different tools and languages.
- You follow best practice, whether that be through test driven development, continuous integration and delivery or in architecture and tooling.
- You actively question solutions, taking steps back if it seems as though the fix isn’t right, either for ourselves, for our productivity or for our users. You thrive on collaboration and support others within and outside of the team, there are no stupid questions and you stop and fix problems at the root, rather than using workarounds.
- You have experience with general networking fundamentals, ideally with Juniper MX, SRX, QFX, EX. Linux – Debian/Ubuntu (advanced beginner – medium-level knowledge).
- Experience with monitoring systems (like Observium/LibreNMS, Prometheus and similar), ticketing systems (Jira, GitLab), PaloAlto firewalls. It would be great if you have a Network certification i.e JNCIS, JNCIP.
