Job Description

To ensure equal access to courts, the Court Interpreter – American Sign Language (ASL) position provides a wide variety of accurate and unbiased ASL interpretation services for hearing impaired individuals, in person or via remote videoconferencing, for the Maricopa County Superior Court.

Responsibilities:

• Provides voice-to-sign and sign-to-voice interpretive communication services to litigants and other court-appointed parties during hearings and proceedings, attorney-client interviews, psychological evaluations and other settings in and out of the court.
• May work in tandem with contract interpreters.

Requirements: 

• High School diploma
• Two (2) years of paid, professional experience as an interpreter of American Sign Language (ASL)
• Legal-A license from the Arizona Commission for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing that is supported by either the Specialist Certificate: Legal (SC:L) or the Court Interpreter Certification (CIC).
• Legal-A license must be maintained during employment.
• Bachelor’s degree in Interpretation, Translation or related field
• Three (3) years or more of paid, professional experience as a sign language interpreter
• American Sign Language
• Theory, method, techniques, ethics and standards of interpreting and translating
• Legal terminology, phonology, vocabulary, grammar, and dialectology
• Conveying meaning accurately without editing, summarizing, adding meaning or omitting
• Effective interpersonal and communication skills and abilities
• Work independently with minimal direct supervision
• Interact with the public in a professional manner
• Interpret accurately and remain impartial including in times of adversarial and emotionally charged situations.
