Position Title: Attorney Senior Counsel

Job Description
As the Attorney Senior Counsel, you will work within the Civil Services Division of the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, Government Advice and Elected Officials Group. You’ll primarily focus on Land Acquisition and Condemnation of Real Property and Tax Lien Foreclosures in this role. In addition, you will also focus on litigation and advisory work representing Maricopa County, its agencies, and employees in State and Federal Courts. The Attorney is primarily responsible for providing general advice to and representation of elected officials and various departments within Maricopa County on topics ranging from statutory duties, open meeting law requirements, government contracts, and procurement.
Responsibilities:
- Performs complex legal work and analysis as it pertains to litigation issues involving the client
- Conducts research and analyzes legal issues using both computerized legal research and hard copy tools
- Handles a broad spectrum of civil claims assigned by the Practice Group Leader, including advising government agencies
- Assists the Civil Division with appeals work, including writing and editing appellate court briefs, defending clients at oral arguments when scheduled, and helping other attorneys in the office by preparing appeals and arguments
- Drafts various documents, including reports and updates, motions, memorandums, and various other court documents as necessary
- Attends court to present and defend the client at status conferences, oral arguments on motions, in evidentiary hearings, and other hearings as set by the court
- Provides risk analyses and status reports to the Practice Group Lead and, where appropriate, to the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, and the clients on all cases and matters assigned
- Assists with supervising and mentoring non-senior attorneys
- Responsible for compliance with the continuing legal education requirements and other requirements imposed by the State Bar of Arizona
Requirements:
- Juris Doctorate (Professional) degree from an ABA-accredited law school
- Minimum of five years of experience in civil litigation, which includes providing advice to government agencies
- Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Arizona driver’s license by the time of hire
- Successful candidates must be admitted to practice law and be in good standing with the State Bar of Arizona as the time of application
- The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office requires a thorough background check of all successful candidates and is authorized to test prospective employees for the presence of illegally accessed drugs. Drug testing is conducted once an offer has been extended and before placement.
- Experience practicing law in a government setting
- Experience handling direct civil trials in the federal and state court
- Experience in state and federal appellate courts
- Experience in training and development, providing legal advice to police agencies, and statistical analysis
