Job Description

This position is a line attorney position within the Civil Services Division of the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office. As the Attorney within the Civil Services Division, your primary focus involves all areas of litigation in Maricopa County, its agencies, and employees in State and Federal Courts. You will be responsible for handling your litigation caseload in federal and state court on various cases, including 42 U.S.C. 1983 and state law tort claims, as well as residential and commercial property tax appeals and other matters as necessary. In this role, you will also be responsible for handling appellate issues that may arise in their cases as the person will be tasked with representing clients in state and federal appellate courts.

Responsibilities:

• Conducts research (case law and statutory legal requirements) and analyze legal issues using computerized legal research and hard copy tools
• Handles a broad spectrum of civil litigation matters assigned by the Practice Group Leader, including civil rights, torts, residential and commercial property tax appeals, and other claims
• Assists the Civil Division with appeals work, including writing and editing appellate court briefs, defending clients at oral argument when scheduled, and assisting other attorneys in the office in preparing appeals and arguments
• Works with outside counsel as necessary to develop client discussions and negotiations as it pertains to the various issues and cases
• Drafts various documents, including reports and updates, motions, and various other court documents as necessary, as well as a legal advice memorandum
• Attends court to present and, when necessary, defends the client at status conferences, oral arguments on motions, in evidentiary hearings and other hearings as set by the Court, and prepare for trial and defend clients in both bench and jury trials
• Provides litigation risk analyses and status reports to the Practice Group Lead and, where appropriate, to the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, the Maricopa County Self-Insured Trust Fund Board of Trustees, the Maricopa County Risk Manager, and clients on all cases and matters assigned
• Responsible for compliance with the continuing legal education requirements and other requirements imposed by the State Bar of Arizona

Requirements:

• Successful candidates must possess a Juris Doctorate (Professional) degree from an ABA-accredited law school
• Minimum of three years of experience in civil litigation with experience litigating cases in state and federal court, as well as state and federal appeals courts
• Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Arizona driver’s license by the time of hire.
• Successful candidates must be admitted to practice law and be in good standing with the State Bar of Arizona at the time of application.
• The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office requires a thorough background check of all successful candidates and is authorized to test prospective employees for the presence of illegally accessed drugs. Drug testing is conducted once an offer has been extended and before placement.
• Preference may be given to those with prior experience practicing law in a government setting and those with civil trial experience in federal and state court
